Roxane Gay's Bad Feminist immediately became so important to me. There aren't enough books of essays by women of color, and this one is a knockout--humane, heartfelt, witty, smart, and wise.

I was trapped in the hinterland under great stress this summer and reached for George Orwell's Collected which included "Shooting an Elephant." Stress seems to be the theme here, as my ex-student (no--former, ex- suggests a falling out) Nathan Deuel published the excellent Friday is the Bomb this year, personal essays on how hard it is to have a wife reporting from a war, terrorists, and his little girl.
